Buy Low: SANTANA

Johan Santana

Naa, not Ervin Santana.

Johan Santana has done well up to this point but historically, he hasn’t been too good in the months of April and May. In fact, Santana actually has a 4.07 ERA in April and a 4.02 ERA in May. Doesn’t sound like Santana does it?

Well it’s almost June now and that means vintage Santana is on the way. Of course there has been some concern over the increase in his home run rate and a possible sluggishness and even a potential injury from the old man (he’s only 30). I don’t think there is any serious reason to be worried here but of course there is always more risk with pitchers than hitters. That’s why I recommended not wasting your first and second round picks on pitchers (see Jake Peavy). For this reason, I still recommend trying to trade away great closers and Starting Pitchers, not your BEST hitters.

All things considered, try and get Santana before he starts pitching like Santana.
